The film has obvious parallels to Maya Deren's work (Meshes of the Afternoon) and to Lynch's later Mulholland Drive (2001), and it's interesting to note that on that subsequent film Lynch was able to smooth out his narrative a bit more.
"Gravity" evokes that silent classic and others—including Maya Deren's experimental short "Meshes of the Afternoon," whose most analyzed sequence, a series of shots boiling evolution down to four gestures, might have influenced the unabashedly metaphorical closing scene of Cuarón's movie.
When people say "Inland Empire" is Lynch's " Sunset Boulevard ," Lynch's " Persona ," or Lynch's " 8 1/2 ," they're quite right, but it also explicitly invokes connections to Stanley Kubrick's " The Shining ," Jean-Luc Godard's " Pierrot le Fou ," Bunuel and Dali's " Un Chien Andalou ," Maya Deren's LA-experimental "Meshes of the Afternoon" (a Lynch favorite), and others.

"Un Chien Andalou" and "Meshes of the Afternoon" (and almost anything by Guy Maddin) don't suddenly become dreams; they live in that world from the first frame.
Porn and horror film violence have always shadowed art cinema, and in films as varied as Un chien andalou, Meshes of the Afternoon, Saló, Hiroshima mon amour, Persona, and Prénom Carmen, art cinema claims the power to depict the most extreme human behavior in a coherent, mediated way, incorporating but going beyond the capacity of marginal sensationalist genres.
