That will no doubt remind Americans of concerns the movie “Broadcast News” raised 34 years earlier, although in that case, “the devil” was a far more compelling character.
It’s David Lynch doing Broadcast News (1987) all wrapped up in a Hollywood studio’s glossy ‘women’s picture’ sentiment (throw in a tinge of social commentary with a noir underbelly).
However, unlike the themes of sexual exploration and individual empowerment that is pervasive in Breillat's films, Intimacy finds greater commonality with the profoundly desperate and marginalized protagonists of Mike Leigh's equally eviscerating and aptly titled film, Naked (1993), and the Bruno Dumont films, The Life of Jesus (1997) and L'Humanité (1999), where attraction and human desire become inextricably bound to the characters' misguided search for identity, validation, and sense of purpose in an aimless and oppressive existence.

There’s Norman Bates spying on Room 1 in Psycho, Bruno Dumont’s French twist on it with Twentynine Palms, unfolding at a Mojave Desert lodge, and documentary The Voyeur’s Motel, based on the scuzzy-but-true story of a Colorado innkeeper who, for decades, secretly gazed down on his customers through ceiling grilles.
It’s the promise of symbolic deflowerment, in that we always want to see the virginal heroine remove the veil and enter into an intimate relationship with the world—whether it’s Julie Andrews, off to climb every mountain, or the heroine of Bruno Dumont’s Hadewijch, dabbling with Islamic fundamentalism.
Essentially, Sandler is giving the kind of performance that won praise for Björk's masochistic pixie routine in "Dancer in the Dark" and for Emmanuel Schotté's ludicrous nonperformance in "Humanité."
She’s not deliciously ruthless like Nicole Kidman in To Die For , or Rene Russo in Nightcrawler ; but she’s not sympathetic either, making a series of poor and selfish decisions.
