In its exploration of Ava and the extent to which she becomes worthy of human empathy even though she's technically a machine, the piece recalls not only Shelley but also Philip K. Dick's Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (aka Blade Runner in film lingo) and H.G. Wells' The Island of Dr. Moreau, particularly its repeated refrain of "Are we not men?"
The film this most reminds me of goes back to the 1980 “The Final Countdown” starring Kirk Douglas, a sci-fi’er in which a modern aircraft carrier gets mysteriously transported back to December 1941 in the hours leading up to the Japanese sneak attack on Pearl Harbor.

Description: The phenomenal success of the 1970 Beneath the Planet of the Apes spawned this sequel in which simian scientists Cornelius and Zira (Roddy McDowall and Kim Hunter, reprising their roles from the first Planet of the Apes movie) travel backward in time, setting the stage for the ape supremacy of the first two films.
Loretta takes the stage with her longtime be-wigged, dimwitted and Fabio-like cover model Dash—real name Alan (Channing Tatum)—who makes his entrance to the sounds of the bombastic stadium rocker “The Final Countdown,” and I guess we’re supposed to take that as an homage to Will Arnett as Gob already mining that particular routine to perfection in “Arrested Development”?

But movies like1980’s Somewhere in Time and The Final Countdown, two of the best, had plausible bases for the time travel.
Its grandfather would be Lawrence of Arabia and its grandmother, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, because that particular oddity from 1971 is the matron of all time paradox movies — movies that can’t decide which came first, the chicken or the egg, so they settle on a light scramble and hope we discuss things until we collapse from exhaustion and no longer care.
