As Cage’s hero neither speaks nor shouts throughout, the actor instead sublimates his depth of feeling into cathartic violence, wordlessly stomping his way through mascots and utterly investing himself in the physicality, not unlike Ryan Gosling in Drive.
If you’re a fan of small budget horror films like Evil Dead (1981), then there’s no question how you’re going to feel because the G.O. Parsons-written Kevin Lewis-directed film feels as much an homage to streamlined horror of the past while being absolutely modern in its approach.
What’s refreshing is just how bizarre the central character is, not responding to the Evil Dead -y carnage with Ash-esque fear, but with a totally nonplussed demeanour.
…because the fictional place these characters occupy simply and unapologetically exists, much as it does in the underrated Willy’s Wonderland…
There was The Banana Splits Movie, an oddly inappropriate Hanna-Barbera horror reboot; and Willy’s Wonderland, starring a non-verbal Nicolas Cage grunting and screaming. Five Nights At Freddy’s is better than at least one of those.
