Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

For those critics who complain that Ritchie's depiction of Holmes is not accurate to Doyle's accounts, I can only remind them that after Twentieth Century Fox made the second of their popular Basil Rathbone Holmes movies, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes," in 1939, the studio changed the time setting thereafter to World War II and beyond, a far bigger revision of Doyle's original concept than anything in Ritchie's world.
In fact, 1955's At Gunpoint starring Fred MacMurray begins much the same way: Baddies ride into town to stir up severe trouble, only to be dispatched by the most mild-mannered guy on the block.
It reverses the basic American migration story, seen in such movies as The Grapes of Wrath (1940), Lost Boundaries (1949), and even The Dollmaker (1984).
However, aided by his amazing crew, The Third Man was made with an extraordinarily atmospheric look to it, using tilted camera angles and the high-contrast climactic chase through Vienna's sewers (which could have been borrowed from a similar scene in Anthony Mann's He Walked by Night , made the previous year).
