Plot
For those keeping score at home, more than the nominal number of characters come and go in “The Hateful Eight,” which evokes the hermetic atmosphere and taut psychological underpinnings of such classics as “Stagecoach” and “The Petrified Forest,” but eventually winds up feeling more like a hysterically pitched live-action version of “Clue.”
It all plays out like a cross between The Petrified Forest and Ten Little Indians , with some Once Upon a Time in the West widescreen splendor to make it pop.
All the same, longtime devotees of the form, including those who flock to Hollywood's American Cinematheque and elsewhere to behold restored 70mm prints, would no doubt rather see an epic film in the format than something closer to the scale of The Petrified Forest or Key Largo.
Let me try to tantalize you by saying that the movie's mood is Chekhovian, as often as not -- exquisitely delicate moments of longing -- and that I'd bet the filmmaker has seen "The Petrified Forest," the 1936 classic, set in a desert diner, with Bette Davis as Gabby, a lonely waitress who dreams of living in France.

A film-length commentary by Bogart biographer Eric Lax is academic but accessible and informative, while the first disc is rounded out with a gallery of trailers for the Bogie flicks The Petrified Forest, Angels with Dirty Faces, The Roaring Twenties, They Drive By Night, High Sierra, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep, Dark Passage, Key Largo, and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
Audiences might best know Bogart for his role as Rick in "Casablanca," but as Dobbs he does his most intense work since "The Petrified Forest."
