At least the American shock cinema that this film recalls, like 1984�s valley girl apocalyptic vision Night of the Comet, had a sense of fun.
Actually, I have, and it was called "Night of the Comet," an underrated gem from 1984 that married John Hughes to George A. Romero .
One has to go back to “Night Of The Comet” (1984) to find a movie that plays the apocalypse for laughs like this.
I also was glad to see him onscreen again with Caine, because they were so good together in the Sherlock Holmes comedy, “Without a Clue.”
It feels like one of those ‘90s Touchstone Films comedies, like Big Business or Captain Ron , in which two funny people were thrown together, put in front of a camera, and told, “Fill the next 90 minutes.”
Boyle presents 28 Days Later as a low budget item shot on DV, purposely reminiscent of past zombie movies, especially a 1980s cult item known as Night of the Comet.
(Viewers would be better off watching “It Follows,” 1983’s “Sole Survivor” or one of the more entertaining entries in the “Final Destination” series.)
Beginning as a more earnest Night of the Comet before swiftly morphing into an episode of the Twilight Zone without sacrificing its you-are-there vérité, Coherence is a low-budget chamber drama that firmly puts the psychological screws to its characters.
Frankly, casting Nicholas Brendon (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) as Mike, a washed-up former “Roswell” co-star, is so meta-inspired that “Coherence” could have coasted into conventional riff on “Night of the Comet” and still satisfied fans.
Rogen, who co-wrote the movie with Evan Goldberg , explores and pokes fun at the conventions of the superhero-sidekick dynamic, much as Without a Clue presented a partnership where Dr. Watson was actually better at crime-fighting than Sherlock Holmes was.
