The nerds are the heroes here, like they were in “Revenge of the Nerds,” and there’s even a nod to “The Hollywood Knights,” thanks to a couple of bumbling cops played by Seth Rogen and Bill Hader.
Short version: Funny, with echoes of Revenge of the Nerds and believe it or not, a bit of heart.
Set in a virtually unparented American everyburb, "Superbad" has a degree more sophistication than "Revenge of the Nerds" and "American Pie," and less than the underrated "House Party."

Thus, we have a sort of “Wedding Crashers” meets “Revenge of the Nerds” with computer-idiots Nick and Billy teaching their techno-savvy team members such life lessons as how to keep their spirits up in the face of adversity and how to get a PG-13 lap dance.
But Vaughn has put them into a really creaky underdog tale that's part Animal House, part Revenge of the Nerds, and a large part "Homer Goes to College" —The Simpsons episode where Homer has to hang out with a bunch of smart, nerdy college kids and teaches them how to have some fun.
Closer in spirit to Meatballs or Revenge of the Nerds than the frosty cool of The Social Network, there is at least a fragment of an interesting idea here.
So “Revenge of the Nerds” meets “Meatballs” in a color-by-numbers comedy that’s neither fast nor furious enough.
Herz and Weitz have decided to teach us a few things about getting some - namely that if you can't actually remember how awful it was not to be having sex in school, copping other movies' memories of it is a good plan B. Their film makes the inevitable nods to "Porky's," "Revenge of the Nerds," "Meatballs" and John Hughes, while aiming for the crassness of "There's Something About Mary" - which, never mind the haters, is proving to be the feel-good movie of nearly any year.
I am a child of the 80s, so I will always think of films like “Porky’s” and “Revenge of the Nerds” as the quintessential teen sex comedies.

So, in the tradition of every movie from “The Dirty Dozen” to “Revenge of the Nerds” (not to mention the hit television show “Glee”), they assemble a ragtag team of singers, including Beca, a brash Tasmanian named Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) and Lilly (Hana Mae Lee), an introvert who barely speaks above a murmur.

Following classic stories of friendship and sexual fumbles like Harold & Kumar and Revenge of the Nerds, Neighbors 2 is a dumb comedy that captures freshman year 2016 from a feminine perspective.
Take "Animal House" or "Revenge of the Nerds," and turn the gender roles inside out, and you'll have "Neighbors 2." In fact, eliminate almost all of the guys.
“The DUFF,” a pleasantly predictable cross between “Revenge of the Nerds” and “Clueless” — in the social media age — is a teen comedy about a high school girl who has a life crisis when she discovers that she’s the “Designated Ugly Fat Friend.”
In fact, if recent film history were a high school cafeteria, “The DUFF” would probably be sharing a table with such wannabes as “Revenge of the Nerds,” “Drillbit Taylor,” and Adam Sandler.
It's a hell of lot funnier than the Revenge of the Nerds rape scene.
The Art of Self-Defense (2019)

Plot
The set-up feels ripe for something of a comedic “Revenge of the Nerds” payback scheme, but “Self Defense,” directed by Riley Stearns (“Faults”) veers off into areas as shocking and black as such recent needle-in-your-eye edgy fare as “Midsommar” and “Under the Silver Lake.”
If the set-up sounds familiar, that's because it's been used for everything from Revenge of the Nerds to about a third of the subplots on The New Adventures of Old Christine.
What makes the movie so appealing is that Famuyiwa has made “Dope” a blend of “Boys n the Hood” and “Revenge of the Nerds” set in Inglewood (making this “Boyz n the Wood”).
There's a Revenge Of The Nerds-style thrust to the narrative, featuring Sandler at his least engaged, and a painful subplot that imagines him in a state of unresolved sexual tension with a client (Michelle Monaghan) who turns out to have a role to play in the fight against the aliens.
But “The Imitation Game” is most on its game when it primarily sticks to being a John le Carre-lite espionage version of “Revenge of the Nerds,” beginning in 1939 as it introduces a battleground of the mind that relies on superior intellect rather than bombs to beat the enemy.
Baymax belongs to Hiro (Ryan Potter) and Tadashi (Tadashi), a pair of robotics and engi-nerd orphans straight out of Revenge of the Nerds or Real Genius.
The closest we come to a plot is a “Revenge of the Nerds”-style rivalry with some moronic frat boys (guided, amusingly, by Taylor Lautner).
It wants to be the traditional "geeks-make-good" movie a la "Superbad" or "Revenge of the Nerds."

They're only slightly smarter than the deadwood around them, but when the chips are down they're tender enough to shape up and treat women with respect, thus distinguishing these modern comedies from, say, Porky's and Revenge of the Nerds.

The plot points follow "Revenge of the Nerds" closely, but there's a subversive streak in Black, who is a real-life member of the humor-infused rock band Tenacious D. Black and screenwriter Mike White (who plays the pushover roommate) expertly turn the film's cliches into comic opportunity.
Revenge of the Nerds, American Pie, Wedding Crashers, Kevin Smith’s work, the Farrelly Brothers’ oeuvre, and the cinematic output of countless Saturday Night Live alum all tried to be affordable and jam-packed with jokes.

With a title like The 40 Year Old Virgin (and with a marketing campaign that borders on genius), you know that, as with other "losin' it" pictures (Losin' It, Revenge of the Nerds , Hardbodies, The Last American Virgin , and on and on), the hero's going to get laid--most often to a fireworks accompaniment (or selections from Hair, as the case may be).
