House of the Dragon (2022)
Directed by Cameron Dixon
influenced by Game of Thrones (2011)
Themes Visuals
In Game of Thrones, the events that precede the War of Five Kings all happen in a relative blur: Barely seven months pass between when Jaime Lannister pushes Bran Stark out of a tower and Robb Stark raises an army.
The stark difference between winning a throne and actually sitting in it day after day has made good material for Westeros fantasy shows since the very beginning of Game of Thrones, and Rhaenyra's storyline this season continued that rich tradition.
What made Game of Thrones such a phenomenon when it first released was how it felt like any character was in constant danger of being killed off at any moment.
This is one of those episodes that most clearly justifies what House of the Dragon wants to be beyond Game of Thrones. After all, Game of Thrones often asked, who will win? This finale asks something nastier.
To have her also dragged down into the abyss that is the Game of Thrones was really, really, really tragic and hard to watch and hard to dramatize, and then hard to see being dramatized for all those reasons.
However, House of the Dragon excels at depicting the aftermath of battle, even better than its wildly popular predecessor.
Comparisons will easily be made to “The Red Wedding” episode of Game of Thrones, but that was a show with a wider ensemble, and the deaths there were smaller pieces in a larger puzzle.
It’s partially an ode to The Lord of the Rings’ Helms Deep sequence (plus some Hardhome from Game of Thrones)…
It was all around excellent TV that ranks right alongside the best episodes of zeitgeist action/drama shows like Lost, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.
There have been cases – Game of Thrones and Blake’s 7 among them – where a lead has been unexpectedly written out, and the focus shifted to other characters.
It's similar to how some fans were displeased at the shorter seasons near the end of "Game of Thrones," but just like for that great show, if Mazin & Druckmann only need a certain number of episodes to tell this part of the story…
Stranger Things and Game of Thrones have proven that high-end productions can meld with sci-fi and fantasy…
The Last Duel (2021)
Directed by Ridley Scott
influenced by Game of Thrones (2011)
Visuals Themes Plot
…or the over-the-top focus on gore of Game of Thrones…
Much like Game of Thrones, the rape in The Last Duel, the core story point, is centered on the men.
Game of Thrones watchers will no doubt recall the trial by combat wherein Tyrion elected the Red Viper to square off against the hulking Mountain as a last ditch effort to prove his innocence.
There’s even some softcore lesbian trysting going on in the background to keep the Game of Thrones fans happy.
At times, it’s like watching “A Man for All Seasons” meets “Game of Thrones” with a soupçon of Monty Python.
“¡Exijo un juicio por combate!” Ese apasionado grito dado por Peter Dinklage en Game of Thrones se convirtió rápidamente en un meme del internet, luego que su Tyrion Lannister entendiera que no tendría justicia por la vía regular.
How to Train Your Dragon (2025)
Directed by Dean DeBlois

This is no longer a kids’ adventure from Dreamworks—this is adolescent Game of Thrones.
Imagine “Game of Thrones” for kids — the aerial sequences alone, paired with a thunderous score, elevate the experience beyond what the animation could achieve.
Here, they’re every bit as believable as the beasts that Daenerys Targaryen rode on Game of Thrones.
…you’re certainly not letting your kids watch Game of Thrones, right…
But Outlander is no Game of Thrones, with its male gaze and frequently naked women.
Audience reaction to Game of Thrones this year highlights the overwhelming view that programmes need to justify their inclusion of sexual assault.
…the Outlander TV series writers have found themselves in a Game of Thrones situation…
It’s all courtesy of The Watch, a group who might sound like they’re from Game of Thrones, but have their own style of brutal cruelty.
…who sits upon an Iron Throne-styled, um, throne…
Dutch (Chidi Ajufo), who sits on an ersatz Game of Thrones chair made out of motorcycle muffler pipes…
…a hideout that's as much arcade cabinet as Game Of Thrones…
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Directed by Peter Jackson
influenced Game of Thrones (2011)
Plot Characters
We don’t want some drawn-out Lord of the Rings battle finale, unless it involves extensive cutaways to doggie-style sex.
…the oft-quoted plot hole that appears to lie at the centre of Lord of the Rings about just flying to Mount Doom on a giant eagle and dropping the Ring into the volcano…
Ramsay Bolton, who looks increasingly like Frodo Baggins’ sociopathic cousin…
If last episode was The Walking Dead’s Red Wedding, Season 9’s finale continues the Game of Thrones trend with frostbitten walkers, as winter arrives for the first time in this series.
…his dynamic with Judith has a certain Game of Thrones Arya-and-The-Hound vibe that has potential for some fun and violence if Negan is ever let out of his cell again.
This is an arc that is still being written in the comics, meaning the TV show may end up going Game of Thrones and overtaking the source material.
The Walking Dead’s official Twitter account tweeted an image of Walder Frey from Game of Thrones. Speculation ran rampant over the potential for The Walking Dead to air an episode as shocking and unforgettable as Game of Thones’ Red Wedding.
It could work, but it is feeling a little eight season of “Game of Thrones” for my taste.
There’s even a scene that’s as shocking as anything you’d see in Game of Thrones.
After a stunning, pulse-pounding build-up that was part Bourne and part Terminator…
You’d need Doc Brown riding in on the back of a T-800 to explain away the end of the latest episode of Game of Thrones.
…its brilliance lay in the way it was stretched out with wicked Hitchcockian glee (and The Godfather and Shakespeare tossed in too)…
…looking for all the world like Alec Guinness as the blind butler in Murder By Death…
It opened like something out of Witness, a bucolic scene as a bunch of Northern Irish extras built a barn and all was harmony and peace.
…an episode of 90s rubber-mallet show Gladiators…
…with a tone that matches its Game of Thrones-esque wording…
…not just Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones)…
Game of Thrones’ Jacob Anderson pops up as Vinder…
…some enjoyably camp villainy on offer from Ian Gelder (Game of Thrones’ Kevan Lannister) as Zellin…
…resembling Avatar or even the Game of Thrones universe more than the animal kingdom…
A fight scene ensues that’s reminiscent of one of Game of Thrones’ most memorably gruesome battles.
It made me think of “Winter is Coming” from Game of Thrones.
The Pitt frequently presents some of the best “action” on television, and it’s realistically gory in a way that its network/streaming peers like Game of Thrones and The Last of Us can only dream of.
Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace (1999)
Directed by George Lucas
influenced Game of Thrones (2011)

The flashback stuff with Bran and the Three-Eyed Raven provided our lot in terms of fights, and it went all Phantom Menace, as young Ned and his pals took on a double-sworded Ser Arthur Dayne in a very skilfully executed skirmish.
