Connections, in both directions

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford poster
The title recalls Peter Weiss’ play The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum at Charenton Under the Direction of the Marquis de Sade (usually referred to as Marat/Sade for obvious reasons).
The Long Walk poster
The Long Walk is a tense, surprisingly emotional film that play out like a mix of Stand By Me by way of Lord of the Flies and The Hunger Games.

But since these are young boys, there’s a Lord of the Flies element that creeps into the proceedings.

I’d describe it as Lord of the Flies on foot, but it’s really more like The Hunger Games for dudes (complimentary)…

The Maze Runner poster
"The Maze Runner," adapted by scribes Noah Oppenheim, Grant Pierce Myers and T.S. Nowlin from the 2007 novel by James Dashner (the first in a trilogy), seems to share a closer kinship to William Golding's 1954 classic "Lord of the Flies" than to most of the modern fantasy YA book-to-screen upstarts.
The Maze Runner can be broken down as William Golding’s Lord of the Flies by way of Lindelof and Cuse’s Lost.

Yes, there are strong touches here of the classic film “Lord of the Flies,” based on the William Golding novel, because there is that concept of young people creating a society out of nothing.

Peter Brook's Marat/Sade, adapted in 1967 from Peter Weiss' play, remains both on stage and on screen a more compelling and brave interrogation of how art can both elevate and enervate a community.

The Hunger Games poster
Collins’s idea seems to be derived from the bloodier Greek myths and Roman gladiatorial contests (the big shots have names like Seneca and Claudius); from William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies”; and from TV spectacles like the myriad “Survivor” shows and sado-Trumpian elimination contests.
Les Misérables poster
You may get more out of it than I did — you could hardly get less — but if I want dramatized French history tarted up with songs, I’ll take Peter Brook’s Marat/Sade (1967).

Good Boys poster
Movies like Lord of the Flies (1963), Walkabout (1971), Bless the Beasts & Children (1971), The Bad News Bears (1976), The Cowboys (1972), The Squid and the Whale (2005), Kids (1995), and Pretty Baby (1978) all had a part in pushing the boundaries on how the portrayal of children is seen on film.
