Unfortunately, as William and his team deal with matters of life and death at the Puerto Rican headquarters of Biodyne Industries, a biotech firm run by people with deep pockets but limited patience, they face a seemingly insurmountable problem: Dead people really don’t like to wake up and find their memories have been stuffed inside something that looks like the mechanical marvel from “Ex Machina.”
With a concept that echoes “Frankenstein” and “Ex Machina” in its themes of playing God in a high-tech world, “Replicas” stars Keanu Reeves as Will Foster, a top employee at a company named Bionyne, where he is trying to basically transplant the human consciousness.
It borrows heavily from Reservoir Dogs (1992), The Fugitive (1993), Infernal Affairs (2002) and The Departed (2006), but it borrows well and some of these recycled ideas work, thanks also to a rousing score by Mark Kilian.
The usual conceit of science fiction stories dealing with transferring consciousness (e.g., 2014's Transcendence) is to kill off the "donor" so that we can imagine that his or her soul/mind/psyche/spirit has been transferred into its new host body, whether electronic or organic.
(Kind of like that Johnny Depp movie Transcendence, where he uploaded his consciousness to the World Wide Web.) Foster has tried this dozens of times, and he finally reaches a step forward in his research—the synthetic body is able to verbalize “Who am I?”—but the brain and body haven’t yet truly synced.
