I mean you have to be pretty deep into sci-fi films to reference the 1988 alien kid's film "Mac and Me."
Not since the odd 1988 boy-meets-alien flop “Mac and Me” has there been a film as egregiously built around product placement as “The Internship.”
Shawn Levy’s sentimental comedy of self-improvement through corporate devotion is every bit as aggressive and shameless in its advertising integration as previous nadirs like the notorious E.T. knockoff/McDonald’s commercial Mac And Me, and Foodfight!
The Olive Garden product placement is far from subtle and reminiscent of the product placement of McDonald's in the dreadful and cringe-inducing Mac and Me.

When the first Guardians debuted, its irreverent, hilarious, bizarro tone came out of nowhere, making audiences fall in love with Marvel's D-list heroes at the confluence of Star Wars, The Ice Pirates and Buckaroo Banzai.
Troma veteran Gunn’s cheeky sensibility owed more to Buckaroo Banzai and The Ice Pirates than The Empire Strikes Back , his eye for colorfully kitschy alien worlds an invigorating change from Marvel’s usual office furniture aesthetic.
Instead, we get a schlocky movie that has more in common with “The Ice Pirates” than “2001: A Space Odyssey.”
