The youngest person to receive an AFI Life Achievement Award, he looked a little awkward balancing Bosom Buddies and Bachelor Party with his sanctimonious do-gooder roles in Apollo 13, Philadelphia, and Forrest Gump, not to mention the Greatest Generation idolatry of Saving Private Ryan.
For all the criticism Phillips has encountered that he's leaning too much on his influences, "Joker" still feels like the work of the bully who, by making "The Hangover," gave bros their own quotable, male-bonding variation on "Bachelor Party."
“Bachelor Party” is that we don’t actually see what happened, so much of the fun comes from watching these guys try to determine what happened in the time between a Jagermeister toast on the roof of Caesar’s Palace and waking up in a trashed hotel suite with a tiger chained in the bathroom and a crying baby in their closet.
That's the starting point for "Wedding Crashers," an unapologetically raunchy and frequently hilarious farce that, at first, seems to have been designed as a salute to the "hey, dude, let's party!" pictures of 20 years ago ("Bachelor Party," "Risky Business," "Night Shift," etc.).
