Instead of tilting at windmills, her Kumiko is convinced she sees treasure where everyone else sees Roger Deakins’ memorable snowy-white landscapes from the Coen brothers classic, “Fargo.”
Rinko Kikuchi does her best to give weight to the slight protagonist, a lonely and unhappy Japanese woman who finds an old VHS of Fargo and – believing the story to be true – sets out to retrieve the cash buried by Steve Buscemi in the Coens' crime drama.
She travels to Minnesota, questing for the briefcase full of money Steve Buscemi's character buried in the snow at the end of "Fargo."
After being nudged by her boss Sakagami (Nobuyuki Katsube) as being on the aged side for an office lady at 29, the lonely outcast decides to take action on the treasure she's been charting from the 'true story' of "Fargo" which she's been analyzing via a beat up VHS tape and become "Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter."
"Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter" is a moody comic allegory about desperation, disconnection and dreams that uses "Fargo," the Coen brothers classic, as a touchstone to examine modern life.
Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter follows a depressed Tokyo office worker as she seeks the bounty from the Coen brothers' fictional crime film Fargo, a stash of money that she believes was hidden, in real life, somewhere in North Dakota.
Another executive producer who has been heavily pushed in the marketing is director Ari Aster (Hereditary, Midsommar), who similarly pushed the boundaries of good taste in his most recent film, Beau Is Afraid.
Executive produced by Ari Aster, Sasquatch Sunset leaned more into the surrealist dark comedy of Beau Is Afraid than the outright shock horror of Hereditary. Although there were moments of terror within the film, these were quickly lightened by its strange sense of humor.
