This is where you might get giddy, as you begin to suspect you’re watching a better version of First Blood with topflight acting: Martius’s eyes grow red and he joins his respected national enemy, Aufidius (Butler), in a move that strikes fear into the hearts of smug senators (chiefly a weaselly Nesbitt).
In this respect there are even traces of John Rambo from First Blood (Ted Kotcheff, 1982) within Fiennes’s Coriolanus.
Crisp, clean cinematography from Rob Hardy who also lensed more classical fare such as 2013’s The Invisible Woman and this month’s Testament Of Youth (also starring Vikander), with production design that speaks as loudly as Garland’s carefully chosen words.
Not since the release of Roman Polanski’s angry, blood-drenched adaptation of Macbeth (1971) in the wake of the Manson murders, Altamont, and Vietnam has a cinematic adaptation of a Shakespearean tragedy felt so timely as Ralph Fiennes’s Coriolanus.
