Kinnaman is more or less channeling Holder from The Killing, but effectively, while Keaton portrays a much more affable Evil CEO than Ronny Cox in the original.
But Kinnaman, so great as a shady, underestimated cop in The Killing, can't quite channel Murphy's agony.
But when honest cop Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman from The Killing ) is badly injured in an attempt on his life, OmniCorp topper Raymond Sellers (Michael Keaton) spots a way into the market, and coerces his top R&D scientist Dr Dennett Norton (Gary Oldman) to concoct a part-man, part-robot policeman, offering the morals and conscience of a human combined with the hydraulics, armour and built-in gunpower of a robot.
Kinnaman plays pre-RoboCop Murphy in the same black tones he used to play an ex-junkie detective on AMC’s The Killing.
Paul Verhoeven’s “ RoboCop ” was one of the seminal science-fiction films of the 80s that would go on to influence several movies of the genre, which makes it no surprise that, like many other similarly important works, it eventually became the target of a remake.
If anyone was under the impression that Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 “ RoboCop ” was a vision of the future, Jose Padilha’s pumped-up, cleaned-up update makes it clear that this sci-fi concept merely holds a mirror to the political present.
“RoboCop” is a RoboMovie.
The RoboCop remake is impressively different from the Paul Verhoeven-directed 1987 bloodbath — it fully justifies its existence.
Even the plot itself — credited to Jeff Wadlow (yes, the same guy who wrote and directed the horrendous Fantasy Island ) and Eric Heisserer — is a mishmash of ideas borrowed from the likes of RoboCop, The Terminator and Edge of Tomorrow, with the latter has a Groundhog Day-like story device involving a dead U.S. marine (Vin Diesel’s Ray Garrison) brought back to life through a scientific experiment supervised by Dr Emil Harting (Guy Pearce) and turned him into a nanobot-enhanced super-soldier.
Bloodshot is a new Vin Diesel action movie that was based on a 1992 Valiant comic book of the same name, optioned by Sony in 2015 with a plan to turn it into “an R-rated adaptation that will be tonally and aesthetically influenced by high-concept, sci-fi blockbusters of the late ’80s including Robocop , Terminator , and Total Recall .”
OCP built Robocop but he remembers being Alex Murphy (Peter Weller).
“RoboCop” needed more of Aronofsky’s “Pi” from 1998 and less of its Michael Bay-esque addiction to blowing stuff up.
It would be glib to compare Sander’s Ghost in the Shell to that of the 2014 Robocop remake because, for all of that film’s faults, it at the very least attempted to engage with the pressing concerns of its present by eschewing Reagan-era reverence and instead contextualizing its premise alongside the American military’s growing reliance on drone warfare.
Small in size but not impact are a number of sharply written and performed supporting roles from Mark Duplass (2015's " The Lazarus Effect ") and Elaine Tan (2014's " Inherent Vice ") as Marlo's seemingly put-together brother and sister-in-law Craig and Elyse; Gameela Wright (2014's " They Came Together ") as Jonah's sympathetic principal Laurie; and Tattiawna Jones (2014's " RoboCop ") as Violet, a stirring reminder of Marlo's past life."Tully"…
In its most commercially successful latterday variant, from Walter Salles’s Central Station through Fernando Meirelles’s City of God to José Padilha’s Elite Squad, that mode has tended to highlight urban deprivation and disadvantaged outsiderhood, and in the latter two cases, spectacular violence, often in a favela setting.
We’ve seen many versions of the scary robot, too — from Skynet creating the Terminators, to Ex-Machina (2014), and RoboCop (1987).
At one point, director Darren Aronofsky (The Fountain, Requiem for a Dream) was attached to helm, and that gave geeks and fanboys cause for rejoicing.
