It may have been a mistake to hire a Frenchman to remake a movie by the Japanese mad genius Takashi Miike ( Audition , Ichi the Killer ), but while director Eric Valette fails to do anything with the derivative plot (borrowed shamelessly from "Ringu," "Ju-On" and other Japanese classics) or the interesting cast, he manages an unusual, appealingly quiet tone.
"One Missed Call" is the latest, based on a 2003 thriller called "Chakushin ari" that was directed by Japan's most twisted and brutal filmmaker, Takashi Miike ("Audition," "Ichi the Killer").
Otherwise, the film feels like a flaccid combination of Boogeyman (is there something really supernatural afoot?) and Final Destination (when and how creatively will the next one die?)
Big question: "One Missed Call" is a remake of a Japanese adaptation of a novel, but isn't this still just "Final Destination" meets "The Ring"?
The concept of young people dealing with their impending mortality is a poor reassembling of Final Destination's ingenious premise.
And though the film takes more than a few pages from early-2000s J-horror, its somber gloss is more reminiscent of that regional boom’s American remakes, such as Gore Verbinski’s The Ring , Jim Sonzero’s Pulse , and Eric Valette’s One Missed Call .
But really, this is nothing less than bottom-of-the-barrel junk; the CGI-heavy (and consequently incoherent) finale and excessively familiar atmosphere (this is essentially The Ring with cell phones) will undoubtedly turn the stomach of even the staunchest horror fiend.

Remaking Japanese horror films seems to be quite the thing during the past couple of years, mostly because of the The Ring's success on this side of the pond.
So now comes One Missed Call, and you can almost imagine the glee that went through some studio executive�s head: It�s exactly like The Ring except with cell phones instead of videotapes!
What began in 2008 with One Missed Call , has carried forward with such “classics” as: The Unborn, Daybreakers, Season of the Witch, The Devil Inside, Texas Chainsaw 3-D, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death, The Forest, Underworld: Blood Wars , and Insidious: The Last Key.
With a scattered collection of years ticking away at a propulsive rate, the sublime music score by Tom Tykwer and Reinhold Heil & Johnny Klimek (2008's " One Missed Call ") becoming one with its whirlwind of imagery, the film's nearly three-hour running time rushes by in a blink, emulating the passage of Old Father Time.
