(It also allows for a final image that beautifully evokes Edgar G. Ulmer's 1934 masterpiece The Black Cat.) Perhaps the most significant change, though, is not so much a change as an elaboration a fleshing out of the concept that Angier is a natural performer, but not a natural magician, while Borden is exactly the reverse.
Generally speaking, the Hammer films were not remakes of the 1930s and ‘40s Universal horrors, though Fisher’s The Mummy (1959) borrowed liberally from The Mummy’s Tomb (1942), and Don Sharp’s The Kiss of the Vampire (1963) reworked elements from The Black Cat (1934).
Its black-and-white, low-budget feel makes it a kindred spirit to the B-movies Godard loves (like Edgar G. Ulmer's Detour and Orson Welles' Mr. Arkadin ).

Another trick of time: an extended convoluted comic-action flashback, begun when Cliff begins to light a cigarette on a roof, which then ends many minutes later with Cliff yet to light, a callback to Edgar G. Ulmer’s 1948 B-movie great “Ruthless.”
Some of these worked, especially Whale's Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and Edgar G. Ulmer's The Black Cat (1934).
Better known under its export title Gently Before She Dies , the film stars Edwige Fenech, Luigi Pistilli, and Anita Strindberg, and uses many elements from Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Black Cat (acknowledging this influence in the film’s opening credits).
