Absent from feature film-making since being fired from a 1996 adaptation of The Island of Dr Moreau (a trauma detailed in the 2014 documentary Lost Souls ), director and co-writer Richard Stanley here reminds us of the skills that made his earlier works like Hardware and Dust Devil cult hits (he even includes a cheeky nod to Moreau, by featuring it's wayward star Marlon Brando on a TV screen).
The granddaddy of the possession genre is, and will probably always be, "The Exorcist," but more recent examples, like 2000's underrated " Lost Souls ," 2005's astounding " The Exorcism of Emily Rose " and 2010's documentary-style " The Last Exorcism ," have also ably pulled their own weight.
Janusz Kaminksi, who has lensed every live-action Spielberg movie since Schindler’s List (plus The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Jerry Maguire, and more), directed only two films, the flop supernatural thriller Lost Souls and the widely ignored Hania.
But the main difference between "Constantine" and its predecessors ( "The Order," "Bless the Child," "Lost Souls," "End of Days," "Stigmata," etc.) is that this film screams "three picture deal" with its transparently sequel-bating finale.
