So it is that, in due course, Chon and O'Bannon both end up stranded in the Nevada desert, with a healthy measure of intense dislike for one another: it's not until they end up trapped in jail together, from which they are freed by Chon's accidental Sioux wife Falling Leaves (Brandon Merrill), who arrives in the plot via a farcical complication that feels enough like a parody of The Searchers that it might actually be deliberate; the film has quite its fair share of references to classical Westerns, including a villain, Van Cleef (Xander Berkeley), named after the co-star of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly among other films.
Meanwhile, mama Bates breaks out of sitcom mold for a late scene of Really Serious Acting, as if suddenly doing Ma Joad in “The Grapes of Wrath.”
It's probably best to not discuss the house party Marmaduke throws when the Winslows go away (complete with tired roof-jumping reference to "Almost Famous"), or the dog surfing competition set-piece.
And although the movie has been peppered with a few reasonably clever bits here and there - ie an amusing Almost Famous reference - Marmaduke primarily comes off as a bottom-of-the-barrel family film that's as devoid of positive attributes as one might've anticipated.
Perhaps we don’t get movies like the canonical 90s and aughts rom-coms—How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003) or Failure to Launch (2006)—because we don’t live in that world anymore.
In a time when all foes have been defeated, Gawain isn’t eager to take on the responsibilities of a knight, or in modern terms, he suffers from Failure to Launch (see Matthew McConaughey for details).

The cinematography by Claudio Miranda (2006's " Failure to Launch ") is vibrant and lush, at once earthy, nostalgic and transcendent in its representation of New Orleans and every other corner of the world Benjamin ventures off to.
The contrast between crisp, bluish scenes of current day reality and the saturated softness of the period progression is handled exquisitely and venturously by cinematographer Claudio Miranda ("Failure To Launch") with a digital Thomson VIPER FilmStream Camera.

Plot
Even the twist that Paula has ulterior motives is just a play on the same plot that propelled McConaughey's "How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days."
And then there’d be no movie called Failure to Launch, which is as nasty and misanthropic a piece of work as, oh, the entire genre of nasty-and-misanthropic “romantic” “comedies” we’ve been bombarded with in recent years ( Deliver Us from Eva , Hitch , How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days ), half of which seem to star Matthew McConaughey.
"Failure to Launch" plays like "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" crossed with "Without a Paddle."
McConaughey could have come straight from the set of "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days," and as in her TV series "Sex in the City," Parker is playing a woman who thinks she's in control of her love life when it's really the other way around.
If you compare his role in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days and his role in this film you may struggle to find anything more than similarities.
It's like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days in reverse.
