But dawdling along as it does, “The Artist and the Model” merely calls attention to all the films that have covered the same ground, most of them just as slow and serene, most of them drawn to exactly the same details about the process of creation (“La belle noiseuse” may be the most carefully observed, and the most tedious).
You'd be forgiven for thinking we're talking about Jacques Rivette's great 1991 film "La belle noiseuse," but this less momentous telling of a similar tale bears the appropriately more prosaic title "The Artist and the Model."
“La Belle Noiseuse,” Jacques Rivette’s greater film with a similar plot, showed the tension and power dynamics in this sort of symbiotic creation through the relationships of two bodies in one space.
When Micky takes his date Charlene (Amy Adams) to see “Belle époque,” the screenwriting brain trust (Scott Silver, Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson share the credit) decides it’s insufficient to simply show Micky’s inability to pronounce the Spanish title of the film or to stay awake during it.
Charlene has her opinions about the foreign film Belle Epoque when Mickey tries to impress her on a date.
Micky and Charlene go on a hilarious first date to an art cinema showing Belle Epoque, but he admits it’s only because he’s embarrassed to show his face at their local hangouts.
Although Bale gets the juiciest scenes, Wahlberg makes just as big an impact with fewer jacked-up flourishes - like when he takes Charlene to "Belle Epoque" (which he pronounces "epicue") and, when a fellow theater patron mentions that the cinematography is supposed to be beautiful, he responds with a shy, "Oh, cool."
Little do they know as they make a suggestive offer to take her to a private beach (which is just a figment of their imagination made up on the spot) that Luisa (Maribel Verdu, "Belle Epoque") is married to another cousin -- a dreary writer who is a little full of himself and more than a little unfaithful.
