The events of the battle have been dramatized stirringly several times since — most notably in the 1958 movie Dunkirk , the 1964 French film Weekend at Dunkirk , and the 2007 Atonement , with its indelible five-minute sweeping shot over the beach.
The film is beautifully realized (production design by James Chinlund, "Requiem for a Dream," "The 25th Hour"), although its limited budget is reflected in a series of dark, narrow corridors which lead to splendid vistas (the temple, a castle, a modern surgery, the queen's thrown).
Director Wolfgang Petersen ("The Perfect Storm") and writer David Benioff ("The 25th Hour") keep the intricate tale reasonably faithful to the source material.
