The late-’80s version of “The Mod Squad” that had a fabulously moussed Johnny Depp as an undercover, passing-for-underage cop?
Like The Mod Squad, it tried to tackle tough issues relevant to Todays Youth, but a network television series could only tackle so hard back in the 80s.
It is because the writer, Scott Silver ("The Mod Squad") made it one by creating a rap music contest.
8 Mile, sharply directed by Curtis Hanson from a script by Scott Silver (who's a long way from the inanities of The Mod Squad ), is a real movie, not a fast-buck package to exploit the fan base of a rap nonentity (hello, Vanilla Ice, goodbye).
Hanson paints a gritty and realistic portrait of the Murder City circa 1995, but the film's problem lies with the story, written by The Mod Squad scribe Scott Silver .
Producer Brian Grazer ("A Beautiful Mind") combines his passion for hip hop with a prestige director (Curtis Hanson, "L.A. Confidential"), a music superstar and a Rockyesque genre script (Scott Silver, "The Mod Squad") for a solid commercial outing.
Screenwriter Scott Silver ("johns," "The Mod Squad" ) covers some obvious territory -- gang troubles, mom's abusive boyfriend, Rabbit's tender devotion to his baby sister, an encouraging love interest (sexy, trashy Brittany Murphy) with a hidden agenda -- but always with fresh and unexpected twists on formula.
But we are rescued from mediocrity by a strong script by Scott Silver ("The Mod Squad," but forgive him), strong direction by Curtis Hanson ( "Wonder Boys," "L.A. Confidental"), and yes, strong acting by the famous Mr. Em.
The human cast is fine and it's nice to see Peggy Lipton (TV's "The Mod Squad") on screen briefly as the adult Hannah.
But seen in the context of recent espionage actioners like his buddy Matthew Vaughn’s gleefully irreverent Kingsman: The Secret Service and Christopher McQuarrie’s sturdily crafted Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, this feels like a tossed-off piece of work, an instantly forgettable time-killer that’s destined to become this decade’s The Mod Squad remake.
