The best movies that feature such stories of pilgrimage ( Into the Wild , The Way ) work so well because we care not only about the physical wellbeing of these characters, but their spiritual salvation as well.
At first glance, “Wild” invites some obvious comparisons to other movies about reckless risk and solitary treks — Sean Penn’s masterful “ Into the Wild ,” Emilio Estevez’s “ The Way ,” about the Camino de Santiago, and this year’s “Tracks,” in which Mia Wasikowska starred as a figure similar to Strayed, a woman walking across Australia to exorcise her demons.
If you remember Emilio Estevez’ brilliant film, “The Way,” from a few years ago, “Wild” would be a most welcome companion piece.
A find-yourself-by-testing-yourself drama in the “Into the Wild” or “The Way” mold, “Wild” sends Cheryl (Witherspoon) on a self-imposed spirit quest to make amends for the self-inflicted damage she’s done to herself and others.
The hotel's manager (William H. Macy, "Edmond," "Thank You for Smoking") is a Bobby follower who forces Timmons to give his staff time off to vote before firing him, but the beloved boss is also cheating on his wife Miriam (Sharon Stone, "Basic Instinct 2"), the hotel's hair stylist, with a switchboard operator (Heather Graham, "The Guru") - Estevez's awkward attempt at a Kennedy stand-in, perhaps?
The obvious comparison is Emilio Estevez’s Bobby (2006), which similarly observed a cross-section of ‘60s America on the eve of RFK’s assassination.
There are fortunately a handful of strong moments and show-stopping set-pieces, but these are the exceptions rather than the rule in a film that is exhausting in all the wrong ways.Following a pre-titles prologue depicting the overtaking of the dwarves' treasure-filled home in the Lonely Mountains by dragon Smaug, and a second prologue set moments before " The Fellowship of the Ring " began, reintroducing Ian Holm (2005's " Lord of War ") and Elijah Wood (2006's " Bobby ") as the older Bilbo Baggins and impressionable young Frodo, the story proper finally gets underway.
