Honest about his influences, he cites soft-core Europorn from the ’60s and ’70s as inspiration for this oddly affecting tale, hat-tipping such films as Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour, Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant and Jess Franco’s A Virgin Among the Living Dead.
Duke operates on dream logic from the start – references abound to Jess Franco and The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant, to give you an idea of what universe we’re in – but the third act sees the visual motifs (panties, insects, the trunk) emphasized, and the character’s anxieties externalized, by way of Brakhage-esque experimental sequences.

Not for nothing is Luis Buñuel’s Un Chien Analou nestled in between Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s Querelle and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom on the left side of the TV set from which Climax’s characters broadcast their dreams.
A stack of video cassettes is piled next to a TV playing an audition reel for a dance troupe who will eventually be revealed as our cast; the titles on display include Argento’s Suspiria, Polanski’s Possession, Fassbinder’s Querelle and Pasolini’s Salò.

Luca also wants to tick all the boxes by casting cult stars as some of the maleficent mob: Renée Soutendijk from Paul Verhoeven’s The 4th Man is in there, while Ingrid Caven, former wife and muse of late great German auteur Rainer Werner Fassbinder, hopefully encourages oh-so-lofty comparisons between this and pics like The Bitter Tears Of Petra Von Kant and (fittingly) Fear Eats The Soul.

In terms of its intense and explicit focus on the public unrest surrounding domestic terrorism and the Baader-Meinhof Group, the 2018 Suspiria is as much a horror film reimagining of Fassbinder’s Die Dritte Generation ( The Third Generation , 1979) as it is a remake of Argento’s original movie.

Predating American Beauty (though Fassbinder's Why Does Herr R. Run Amok? beat both to the punch), Todd Solondz's Happiness (1998) deserves a mention here as being not only painted in a similar hue, but also not interested in the slightest in celebrating the absolute emptiness of American Beauty's worldview.
Schroeder and Müller clearly looked at Fassbinder's Ali: Fear Eats the Soul several times as they plotted out Barfly.
