Connections, in both directions

John Wick poster
However, finding amusement in this John Wick rip-off is a tall order for most audiences.

Ever since Keanu Reeves turned John Wick into a box office phenomenon, we've gotten a succession of movies in which big stars go on stylishly-photographed sprees of violent mayhem.

Too bad Wexler is neither Chad Stahelski nor David Leitch to pull off the kind of a female John Wick or Atomic Blonde-style kickass, all-hell-breaks-loose action film.

Everyone’s chasing their own John Wick vehicle these days, and Kate Beckinsale is certainly an alluring pick to receive her own neon-splashed gonzo action-thriller franchise.

Whereas John Wick and The Purge existed as self-contained entities that possessed the mythology necessary to expand, Wascha has written Lindy’s life in a way that’s trying to buy more time than it already has.

Lindy goes on a rampage of her own after a date she’s smitten with turns up murdered, pursuing his killers with vicious abandon, and what follows is yet another single-minded quest for cutthroat vengeance in the style of “John Wick,” which has already spawned several imitators.
The Road to Wellville poster
"Hysteria" is a cousin to Alan Parker's "The Road to Wellville," where a British director took on the American story of Dr. Kellogg's obsession with colonic cleanliness.

Mary Poppins poster
Hugh Dancy stars as Mortimer Granville, the Victorian doctor who patented the first electromagnetic vibrator, and Maggie Gyllenhaal—in a performance she seems to have modeled on Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins—is the charming proto-suffragette who wins his heart.

My Best Friend's Wedding poster
Gyllenhaal gives a delightful performance, but the film's secret weapon is Rupert Everett ("My Best Friend's Wedding") as Mortimer's wealthy friend of 'perverse' sexual appetites and penchant for inventions.

Instead, it’s a semi-snarky generic-brand Atomic Blonde, replacing Charlize Theron’s tough-as-nails physical abilities and David Leitch’s stunt experience with empty promises of excess.

But Jolt, which was acquired by Amazon Studios earlier this summer after collecting dust on a studio shelf for almost two years, is a woefully unimaginative, mirth-deficient mishmash of John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and Crank.

Boys and girls, hold on to your socks, for the Aldi Atomic Blonde has arrived!
Think Charlize Theron in Atomic Blonde , Jennifer Garner in Peppermint , and Bob Odenkirk in Nobody .

What follows is a post- Atomic Blonde thriller that has just enough style that my mom and my sister will find it thrilling without being put off by anything too extreme.

A la The Taming of the Shrew, the mild Emily has an older sister who’s considered socially out of step, brazenly supportive of women’s rights and determined to pursue her own career as a social reformer running a settlement house for poor women and children.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day poster
Here’s a film that could easily have been tasteless, leering and puerile, but instead Tanya Wexler’s Hysteria is funny, charming, warm, smart—and probably the best romantic comedy since Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day back in 2008.
Young Frankenstein poster
(The one about the woman who, at the moment of climax, bursts into an aria has the dust of “Young Frankenstein” on it, if not the cobwebs of burlesque.)
The vibrator is born, and its first official test subject is the aforementioned opera singer, giving director Tanya Wexler and screenwriters Stephen Dyer and Jonah Lisa Dyer the opportunity to, um, dust off an old joke from " Young Frankenstein ."
Listen Up Philip poster
But Philip, who's been antagonizing everybody lately, decides against doing any press, instead hitching his post to an idol, Ike Zimmerman (Jonathan Pryce, "Brazil," "Hysteria"), who not only admires his new book but has offered his country home as a writing retreat in "Listen Up Philip."

The Dark Knight poster
Sony Picture Classics presents one of its atypically weaker releases with the provocative idea of the invention of the electric vibrator during the height of Victorian prudery fictionalized into a romantic comedy which pushes the real Granville into the arms of the unconventional Charlotte Dalrymple (Maggie Gyllenhaal, "The Dark Knight"), a women's rights activist too modern for her time period.

I haven't been a big fan of Maggie Gyllenhaal (although I definitely preferred her to Katie Holmes in The Dark Knight), but she shines here as the rebellious, crusading daughter of Jonathan Pryce's gynecologist.

That's all the connections!
