Davis pays homages to the likes of John Woo's "The Killer" and Besson's "The Professional" but except for a funny take on "Point Break's" parachuting shootout, they play like an enthusiastic film school kid's recreations on a limited budget.
Duncan’s gloves that control Gatling guns recall the rig in “Shoot ’Em Up,” only without any humor to the bombast.
Only in this moment do we get a sense for the streamlined shoot-’em-up (or, at the very least, Shoot ’Em Up ) that Polar should have been.
It’s a fun, violent, well-crafted scene playing every bit towards fans of Shoot ‘Em Up (2007) and Smokin’ Aces (2006).

And the scene is a complete rip of a funnier and sexier moment between Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci in Shoot ’Em Up, a film much smarter than this one.
Take Death Proof, combine it with Michael Davis’ Shoot ‘Em Up (2007), add a supernatural component, ramp it up and you have Drive Angry 3D.
Although the big shootout in which Milton tries to finish his lovemaking while finishing off an onslaught of would be assassins falls far short of a similar action sequence in "Shoot 'Em Up."

Despite these visual miscues, Drive Angry should prove certainly amusing enough to those who enjoy the colorful, button-pushing, non-stop lunacy of flicks like Running Scared, Shoot ‘Em Up, Crank, and Smokin’ Aces.

Or maybe I'm thinking of Mr. Owen's role in "Sin City" .
"Shoot 'Em Up," written and directed by the gung-ho Michael Davis, is the most audacious, implausible, cheerfully offensive, hyperactive action picture I've seen since, oh, "Sin City," which in comparison was a chamber drama.
New Line will certainly sell Shoot 'Em Up, which opens September 7 in the US, to the same comic-book/action crowds that sampled 2005's Sin City and this winter's Smokin' Aces.
He’s a crusty, corny, and skilled warrior who really just falls into this violent situation, and Owen takes a bit of Dwight from “Sin City” along with Porter from “Payback” and creates a hilarious hybrid all while spouting clunky one-liners that are so bad they’re funny.
I mean, Clive Owen was already in Robert Rodriguez's "Sin City" playing the same sort of laconic, film-noir character he plays here, and "Sin City" was a better movie.
It’s a shame that a film called Shoot ‘Em Up already exists (a 2007 Clive Owen vehicle, since you ask), because that would have been the perfect title for this adrenaline-fuelled Russian-American co-production, which explicitly replicates the experience of playing a spectacularly violent first-person shooter video game.

Plot
Falling somewhere between the body-count foolishness of Shoot ‘Em Up and the cold war seriousness of Atomic Blonde , the plot seems driven by set pieces and style-as-substance more than story considerations.
That’s not a style that works much of the time (see “Shoot ’Em Up” or early Arnold Schwarzenegger flop “The Villain”), but in the hands of “The Expendables 3” helmer Patrick Hughes — and more importantly, owing to the chemistry of stars Samuel L. Jackson and Ryan Reynolds — it makes for a delightfully ridiculous screwball action comedy.
If not, you should probably be looking for your Shoot ‘Em Up thrills elsewhere.
Strangely, had Noyce juiced up his direction a la the delirious Shoot 'Em Up, the film might have left more of an impression.
