Unlike something like The Possession , which slapped some Jewish spiritual concepts on a generic horror script, The Vigil makes the spiritual traditions and collective cultural experience of Judaism an essential part of its metaphor.
In recent films you have had malevolent ghosts called dybbuks, as seen in the David S. Goyer/Michael Bay film "The Unborn" (2009) and Ole Bornedal/Sam Raimi film "The Possession" (2012), and monsters made of mud or clay that come to life known as golems, most prominently featured in the Israeli movie "The Golem" (2018).
