"Appaloosa, New Mexico, 1882" the titles tell us, but I'd put it closer to "Rio Bravo," circa 1959.
While the plot borrows from several classic Westerns — "Rio Bravo" and "3:10 to Yuma" to name two — it attempts to be a sprawling epic along the lines of "Lonesome Dove."
Other parts of Appaloosa may remind one of Howard Hawks's classic Rio Bravo and the ending has reverberations from George Stevens' classic Shane.
Like Howard Hawks â 1959 classic Rio Bravo , this is an honest tale of the camaraderie between a pair of lawmen simply trying to do a job.
It isn't, anymore than Howard Hawks's great "Rio Bravo," in which John Wayne and friends find common bonding in their battle against ruthless crooks, is a buddy picture.
His story carries echoes of Rio Bravo and Budd Boetticher's Westerns , but keeps moving along at its own pace.

Laura Linney has a thankless role, that of the supportive woman who stands by her obsessed, brilliant man (see also Jennifer Connelly in “A Beautiful Mind,” Marcia Gay Harden in “Pollock” ), but she does it stoically and with grace.
In what is a primarily two-actor showcase, Viggo Mortensen (2008's " Appaloosa ") and newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee share a comfortable and trusting chemistry.
