“Double Dragon” was a simple story of two brothers taking on street gangs to rescue a lady, but the 1994 film added in mystical amulets, post-apocalyptic elements and more on top of that basic premise.
It's not just the title that's a nod to video games as the structure of the movie is similar to classic side-scrolling beat-em-ups like Double Dragon , with Roy taking on the various assassins and working his way up.
Grillo is Double Dragon ‘s Billy and Jimmy Lee in one, scrolling through his levels until victory is all that remains.
The Wick movies do the same, but they never let their stars get in the way of the process — sure, you’re using Mark Dacascos’s iconography in some ways, but if you don’t know shit about Double Dragon , you’ll find it just as fun regardless — and everything works together as a seamless whole, with everyone playing Jerry Lewis to Keanu’s Dino.
While there’s the occasional win (“Wreck It Ralph”), this genre is awash with the critically reviled ( “Pixels” ) and box office losers (“Super Mario Bros.,” “Doom,” “Double Dragon”).
