The backstage farce as depicted here is a noble tradition, stretching back to “Kiss Me Kate” and “Noises Off.” Riggan feeling small even as the pictures got bigger is a clear nod to “Sunset Boulevard.”
And not since Gene Kelly danced with Jerry the Mouse in "Anchors Aweigh" has an actor had such breezy rapport with a character built of special effects as Downey has with the robot assistants in Stark's lab.
You can spot him as a fluffy-haired young dancer, spreading sunshine all around in Give a Girl a Break and Kiss Me Kate.
As a wearer of distance glasses, I loathe the revival of 3D, a silly gimmick for kids from the 1950s that blighted everything from Bwana Devil to Kiss Me Kate and mercifully died out with House of Wax.
I never see "The Taming of the Shrew" anymore without vaguely longing to hear the Cole Porter score for "Kiss Me, Kate." "My Fair Lady" exists on its own.
