“The Hunt” tries to tackle America’s zeitgeist by riffing on Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” and pitting liberal elites preying on Trump’s “deplorables” for sport.
It’s loosely based on Richard Connell’s 1924 short story The Most Dangerous Game , about a millionaire who kidnaps people and brings them to his island where he hunts them for sport – until he meets his match.
Advertising for The Hunt suggested a modernized The Most Dangerous Game , chronicling a group of wealthy liberal elites hunting uneducated, low-income conservatives for sport.
It’s a setup inspired by The Most Dangerous Game, but with a politically-charged twist: the hunters are wealthy “liberal elites” and their prey is a random assortment of working class folks they’ve designated as “deplorables.”
An admittedly delicious riff on Merian C. Cooper’s The Most Dangerous Game , The Hunt imagines a world in which the worst nightmares of Breitbart readers and QAnon conspiracy theorists are true: there is a cadre of rich elites who look down on gun-clinging and Bible-thumping “hicks” and rednecks—assuming every white Southerner is a racist, and each cowpoke who says “ma’am” is a not-so-secret misogynist.
Which is to say The Hunt fails as a genre exercise too, busy being self-satisfied about its dud point-making to escape the shadow of funner, similarly themed “human hunt” films including Hard Target (1993), the Adkins-starring Hard Target 2 (2016), right back to pre-code The Most Dangerous Game (1932).

Yet this shift onto the “enemy” perspective, which appears to be riffing on The Most Dangerous Game (1932), hardly makes things any more stable.
One also imagines that they consumed Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai and countless films by Sergio Leone, perhaps even some slasher movies and classics of the “hunting humans” sub-genre, such as The Most Dangerous Game and The Naked Prey.
As it turns out, they’re tourists, playing their own version of The Most Dangerous Game.
Survival classic The Most Dangerous Game gets a nod from this thriller by Kleber Mendonca Filho (Neighboring Sounds) and Juliano Dornelles, and so does the sci-fi horror genre.
A bloody Brazilian riff on “The Most Dangerous Game,” the sinews of which are girded with so many allusions to local culture and politics, “ Bacurau ” is that rare movie that probably would have been better if it had been dumber, or at least less ambitious.
At a glance, without any context of what's happening in Brazil, as the Bacurauans get rid of foreigners and traitors, the film is a silly, tacky man-hunting-man horror movie akin to The Most Dangerous Game or Naked Prey or even Hostel or Ruins.
Instead, the letter rips off themes from "The Most Dangerous Game," a Richard Connell short story frequently included in high school literature anthologies about an obsessed hunter who stalks shipwrecked humans on his private island.
While Graysmith solves part of the first cipher, revealing its manhunting reference to the 1932 film The Most Dangerous Game, for the first two-thirds of the film Fincher has Gyllenhaal literally looming in the background, as two more murders occur and the letters keep coming, one threatening to pick off schoolchildren as they step off the bus.
The Zodiac code seems to contain a reference to a 1932 movie, The Most Dangerous Game, in which a madman hunts human prey.
When the phrase “man is the most dangerous animal of all” ends up in one of Zodiac’s letters to the newspaper, a possible connection is drawn to the Richard Connell short story (invariably referred to as a book in the movie) “The Most Dangerous Game” and its 1932 film incarnation.
Graysmith goes one better when he connects a Salinas couple’s interpretation of the cipher to a 1932 RKO film entitled "The Most Dangerous Game," about a Russian Count who hunts people on his private island.

The Richard Connell short story "The Most Dangerous Game," for example, has inspired any number of adaptations, legitimate and otherwise, of its tale of a big-game hunter so bored with taking down regular animals that he sends off human beings to serve as his quarry.
"The Hunger Games" has other things on its mind, namely raw survival, in the vein of "The Most Dangerous Game."
And the finished film, though it combines elements familiar from short stories "The Lottery" and "The Most Dangerous Game," does come off as a lethal "Survivor" or even"American Idol" with deadly weapons.
He might have added The Truman Show (for the TV cameras hidden throughout the forest environment to catch every pursuit and fatality), Oliver Twist (for the children forced by adults into criminal behavior), Romeo and Juliet (for the poison that two lovers plan to take) and, centrally, Richard Connell’s 1924 story “The Most Dangerous Game,” whose scenario of a mad Cossack trapping humans on his Caribbean island and hunting them down like big game has inspired a couple dozen Hollywood films.
“Truman Show’’ and “Wizard of Oz’’ are joined by “Logan’s Run,’’ “The Running Man,’’ “The Most Dangerous Game,’’ “The 10th Victim,’’ “1984,’’ “Big Brother,’’ “Red Dawn,’’ and countless other influences, and there’s an angry online contingent of “Battle Royale’’ fans that want their 2000 drive-in Japanese classic left in peace.

And his third-act nod to The Most Dangerous Game is amusing in spots.
This time around, DeMonaco, who wrote both “Purge” movies and has once again secured a first-rate cast, ups the ante on the one-percenters versus the poor theme by staging a replay of the classic “The Most Dangerous Game,” with the super-rich as hunters and the mob as hunted.
It's still not a great movie, but its drive-in aesthetics recall such films as "Escape From New York," "The Most Dangerous Game" elements of the first film magnified in a climactic bit of satire that's a memorable set piece.
Despite being like an open-invitation “Hunger Games” or modern, legal, domestic update of “The Most Dangerous Game,” the “Purge” franchise retains some suspense and thrives on Grillo’s sturdy resolve.

This lurid, comical blend of "Rosemary's Baby," "The Most Dangerous Game" and Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" begins with a flashback that reveals a bit too much of what bride-to-be Grace (Samara Weaving) is about to experience.
Yet while The Hunt was canceled because it too explicitly adhered to red-blue political divides — pitting billionaire liberal elites straight out of a Josh Hawley fever dream against a cadre of Real Regular Americans — it's interesting to note that Ready or Not, another riff on "The Most Dangerous Game" in which the aristocratic hunters eventually become the prey, premiered without incident this week.
Ready of Not takes the best and most crowd pleasing elements of The Most Dangerous Game, Your’re Next, The Purge, and Clue and blends them into a tasty, bloody smoothie.
The latest from Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, two-thirds of the filmmaking group Radio Silence best known for the first-person horror segment of V/H/S , mashes up Clue and The Most Dangerous Game and infuses it with dark, nutty energy, gore (the loopy rather than repulsive kind), smart laughs and sharp satire at the expense of America’s well-to-do.
Oh wait, there's still one left and it's Ready or Not, a bloody hilarious take on The Most Dangerous Game that somehow slipped through the cracks in Disney's acquisition of Fox.
Ready or Not joins the pantheon of people being hunted movies alongside classics like Battle Royale , The Most Dangerous Game , The Running Man (it’s a classic!), and Hard Target .
"Predator," you may recall, is the alien version of "The Most Dangerous Game," where man ends up being hunted for sport.

Throughout David Guy Levy’s tautly done piece of trash I kept flashing on two movies, Pasolini’s Salo (for obvious reasons) and the 1932 The Most Dangerous Game, which posited Leslie Banks as a demonic deserted island overlord bent on making miserable the lives of his captive prey, Joel McCrea and Fay Wray.

Danny Huston—with a little Mephistopheles beard that makes him look like Leslie Banks in The Most Dangerous Game (1932)—isn’t much better as a sinister psychiatrist.
And appropriate to such a famous story, Hollywood has made it into any number of movies and imitations like "Run for the Sun," "A Game of Death," "The Naked Prey," and the like.
So claims the narration at the beginning of Cornel Wilde’s The Naked Prey (1966), a mildly pretentious (the characters don’t even have names; they’re just types) African-set variant on The Most Dangerous Game (1932).
It is here, about two-thirds of the way into the movie, where Apocalypto finally comes to life and reveals itself to be a variation of The Most Dangerous Game (1932).

“Kong: Skull Island” is enjoyably linear and it suggests a cross between “The Most Dangerous Game” and “Apocalypse Now” as the characters separate and come back together while attempting to make it across the island alive.
"The Purge" is the progeny of such films as "The Most Dangerous Game," "Funny Games" and "The Strangers," but is far from the equal of any of them.

Its place as a riff on “The Most Dangerous Game” and “Lord Of The Flies” is what made the first film compelling, but there’s surprisingly little life-or-death drama here.
A wild mix of "After Hours," "The Most Dangerous Game" and "A Christmas Carol," "The Game" imaginatively places a self-absorbed businessman into the middle of a deadly, real-life game of cat-and-mouse and then watches him fight for his survival, both emotionally and physically.
“I can’t tell you any more unless you agree to pilot this craft,” says Brand—and the deal’s done, making this the most casual recruitment for a space project since the Tintin book Destination Moon.
