What follows is an ungainly melange of confusing visions flashing before Peter’s eyes, generic set-pieces that feel cribbed from better movies (namely Spielberg’s War of the Worlds remake and Beyond Skyline), and comical alien creatures achieved through a fairly ropey combination of cheap suits and cheaper digital effects.
Extinction emerged from an early script by Spenser Cohen and Brad Kane, which was then reworked by A-list screenwriter Eric Heisserer, whose extremely spotty track record ( Lights Out and the A Nightmare on Elm Street and The Thing reboots) includes Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-winning Arrival .
Directed by Ben Young, and co-written by the Oscar-nominated writer of Arrival , Eric Heisserer, Extinction has all the right pieces.
Despite the presence of talented, appealing thesps such as Michael Peña, Lizzy Caplan and Mike Colter, not to mention a script co-written by Arrival scribe Eric Heisserer, Extinction is more-or-less as bad as its cancelled theatrical release implies.
I’ve seen every entry into the horror genre, from The Last House On The Left (1972), to Cannibal Holocaust , Ichi The Killer , Irreversible , and everything in-between, and viewing Hounds of Love is a truly emotionally trying experience on par with some of the most disturbing horror films out there.
Extinction is a Frankenstein’s monster that mostly works; it is Planet of the Apes meets I, Robot , with a touch of The World’s End without the comedy.
