As directed by Fernando Meirelles, it’s in the tradition of kicky-ironic action pictures—a foreign art movie for fans of Quentin Tarantino and New Jack City (1991).
The basic story of this Brazilian film is not that different from, for example, "New Jack City" (not a bad movie itself) or "Blow," but "City of God" rises so far above the conventions of its genre and of most ordinary filmmaking that it's a completely transcendent experience ?
Hip-hop culture was at its peak, and it swiftly moved into the mainstream, thanks to musical artists like DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, TV shows like In Living Color, and movies like New Jack City.
I was expecting a sort of in-your-face gangster saga – a slightly more low-key Scarface or a modern-day New Jack City, if you will.
Fortunately, Crews (also in the recent Baadasssss!) provides the movie's only silver lining.
The playboy is played by the very funny Terry Crews, of "Baadasssss!" and "Soul Plane," who seems to be spending his year stealing scenes in neo-blaxploitation movies.
