As aforementioned, Lilo & Stitch is iconic — and my personal favorite Disney animated film — because of its unconventionally mature themes, offbeat personality, and execution.
2002’s Lilo & Stitch is a story about finding your family.
The original Lilo & Stitch took its job seriously.
En 2002 se estrenó «Lilo & Stitch», una historia que difería bastante de otras que habíamos podido ver previamente en la compañía…
Disney’s quest to make what’s old new again trudges forward with the remake of the most recently released film, to date, with a “new” take on 2002’s Lilo & Stitch.
…a shot-for-shot carbon copy of the original film’s intro, of the titular chaotic alien Stitch (voiced by Chris Sanders), a.k.a. Experiment 626, escaping from his jailers and finding his way to Earth…
It’s stange to have two beloved animated films in theaters once again, but to have them presented in a way that so much of what made them loved is missing. Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon have something in common aside from their live-action remakes sharing theater space.
…followed it with a more recent, but adored, property, LILO & STITCH…
The new How to Train Your Dragon is somewhat easier to rationalize than Lilo & Stitch: while the latter’s animation style has ensured a timeless aesthetic, the former has begun to show its age, if only slightly.
The film is a big hit, even if it’s not going to do Lilo & Stitch or A Minecraft Movie numbers in the family-friendly space.
…as the latest Lilo & Stitch movie will soon enter the billion-dollar club.
This results in a less interesting film than, say, the new Lilo & Stitch (another recent live-action remake of a DeBlois and Sanders team-up, coincidentally), albeit one that still works as a touching spin on the story we already know.
For every critically beloved remake like 2016’s The Jungle Book…
…the difference between the good movies (The Jungle Book) and the bad ones (Pinocchio)…
…we’ve seen this blend of nostalgia and modern polish before, and better, in previous remakes like Cinderella or The Jungle Book…
“The Jungle Book” (2016)…
…there is a plethora of straight-to-streaming messes like 2022’s Pinocchio…
Robert Zemeckis’ atrocious take on “Pinocchio” has that trophy locked up.
…the difference between the good movies (The Jungle Book) and the bad ones (Pinocchio)…
Where many other recent Disney remakes (The Lion King, Mulan, Pinocchio, Oh God Why Does this Keep Happening) often feel like they were algorithmically generated…
…ideally more Sonic The Hedgehog than Space Jam…
…unlike the outdated CGI of 2022’s Pinocchio or the early trailers of Sonic…
…o el de «Sonic», que la primera versión del personaje era bastante fea…
I’m not anti-Disney or anti-live action, having enjoyed last year’s tent-pole Lilo and Stitch…
If the box-office returns for a second-rate live-action take like last year’s Lilo & Stitch could fill the company’s coffers…
…last year’s phenomenally successful Lilo & Stitch remake won audiences over by adding enough askew humour of its own…
The feature went back into development in the fall following the success of Lilo & Stitch, which opened in May 2025 to $146 million in North America, en route to hitting $1 billion globally.
…a “Lilo & Stitch” where Nani gives up Lilo to social services…
…we’ve seen this blend of nostalgia and modern polish before, and better, in previous remakes like Cinderella or The Jungle Book…
“Cinderella” (2015)…
This is an issue that Disney’s remake of The Little Mermaid suffered from greatly as well, of all projects.
…has resulted in some dire, bloated remakes like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid…
The Little Mermaid (2023)…
…the results have ranged from slick but soulless (The Lion King) to pointless and forgettable (Aladdin)…
…has resulted in some dire, bloated remakes like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Little Mermaid…
Live action reboots of Lion King or Aladdin have been popular, but worked better as animations.
What's your favorite live-action Disney remake?
Aladdin (2019)…
These non-cartoon retreads usually suck—think “Mufasa: The Lion King,”…
…recent efforts like Snow White and Mufasa: The Lion King flirted with novelty…
…the world almost completely forgot other weird Disney movies of this era like Atlantis: The Lost Empire and Treasure Planet…
“Atlantis: The Lost Empire” (2001) was an all-out dud…
…ideally more Sonic The Hedgehog than Space Jam…
…o a la saga 'Men in Black'…
A Bug’s Life (1998)…
The endeavor, which began with the billion-dollar gross of Tim Burton’s heinous reimagining of Alice in Wonderland…
Alice in Wonderland (2010)…
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
Directed by Wes Anderson
influenced Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2022)
Visuals
This array may range from the darker narrative, like Henry Sellick’s fantasy coming-of-age Coraline (which is Laika’s best work to date) and the traumatizing The Wolf House , to more family-friendly works, like Park and Box’s slapstick phenomenon of Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox .
…transforming her from overworked side character to co-lead in what often feels like a Hawaiian-flavored Lady Bird…
“Stitch bad,” says the alien to Lilo, magically evoking the end of “Bride of Frankenstein” when the monster declares, “Alone bad — friend good.”
It often has the energy of a Home Alone or The Iron Giant…
…the hilarious compromise of “The Emperors’ ‘New Groove” (2000)…
