As if he is channeling Federico Fellini’s Amarcord, Chantal Akerman’s Jeanne Dielman, Lucrecia Martel’s The Holy Girl or Edward Yang’s Yi Yi, there’s no denying Roma is Cuarón’s most personal film since his 2001 classic Y Tu Mamá También.
Other parallels: unflinching widescreen Romanian movies like Cristi Puiu’s “The Death Of Mr. Lazarescu”; Edward Yang’s Olympian patience in capturing family life in “Yi Yi”; and the vital urban life of his own prophetic masterpiece, “Children of Men.” (Cuarón recently name-checked Alain Tanner’s bittersweet seriocomic masterpiece, 1976’s class-straddling “ Jonah Who Will Be 25 in the Year 2000.
Unimpressed, Taiwan’s post-war generation, including Yang himself deserted film in the 70s—had he not found himself heavily inspired by Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God, perhaps Taiwan would never have experienced the beauty of the auteur’s work.
At its best moments (many of them involving Hawke), Boyhood reminded me of the great Taiwanese filmmaker Edward Yang, about the highest compliment I can deliver, who made several sweeping epics that focused on family, youth and urban society, the best-known of which is his final film Yi Yi , which also leaned on some melodramatic twists in its enrapturing portrait of a middle-class family.
It also makes Taipei, for all the alienation depicted, look like fun, much more of a playground than the paranoid space of Edward Yang’s The Terrorizers, made six years earlier.
