While “Lethal Weapon 4” kind of poked fun at Riggs and Murtaugh directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah manage to show the pair here at a crossroads in their lives where they don’t think jumping in to a hail of bullets is fun anymore.
It veered close to parody of the quip-laden rogue cop movies of the 1980s like Lethal Weapon and Die Hard.
Back in the day, the Bad Boys films were attempts to push the tried-and-tired cop-buddy thriller into increasingly more ludicrous and offensive territory; they were extravagant and silly and morally dodgy in ways that even over-the-top hits like Lethal Weapon wouldn’t dare match.
Bad Boys ’ dusty 1980s roots finally get some nourishment too, as the story (which doesn’t really matter, but is competently written by Joe Carnahan, Peter Craig, and Chris Bremner) is essentially what would happen if you fell asleep in the middle of a classic Miami Vice episode and tried explaining it the next morning: Will Smith is Sonny Crockett, Martin Lawrence is... well, he's less Ricardo Tubbs than he is Lethal Weapon ’s Roger Murtaugh, but that's '80s as hell, so it still tracks.
Arguably, a series about two Miami cops taking down bad guys has been better than it had any right to be, but it managed to break away from being a Lethal Weapon clone and do its own thing on the strength of its leads and the cartoonish set pieces.

Action movies now belong to long-running franchises like Fast & Furious and Mission: Impossible , a PG-13 landscape where characters are borderline superheroes.
Ironically while a much bigger franchise like the “Mission: Impossible” movies still feature Tom Cruise defying age itself, “Bad Boys for Life” acknowledges it.
The addition of AMMO also gives the production a Mission: Impossible vibe that hopefully will be explored even further in future films.
The set-pieces, meanwhile, are suitably muscular and over the top, weaving in some nice references to past sequences, while clearly mindful of the new benchmarks set by the likes of the Mission: Impossible movies.
John Wick , The Fast and the Furious , plus Mission: Impossible push the genre’s spectacle and change how an action hero can behave.
They’re also in charge of Beverly Hills Cop ’s resurrection.
It’s hard to imagine these days how thoroughly synonymous with Hollywood the producers Don Simpson (now deceased) and Jerry Bruckheimer were in the eighties and nineties, how they bestrode the town like colossi, how lavish were their offices, how they churned out hit after hit – Flashdance, the Beverly Hills Cop films, Top Gun, shiny-loud constructions that went Vroom! and Sizzle! and Blam-Blam-Blam!
Thanks to countless showings on cable TV over the past two decades, Lowery and Burnett have evolved into a beloved duo in the vein of Lethal Weapon’s Murtaugh and Riggs or the trio of Foley, Taggart, and Rosewood in the first two Beverly Hills Cop films.
I can’t deny that fans of Transformers , Beverly Hills Cop , and/or the first two Bad Boys movies (notice the age-range span there), will probably enjoy this film.
Martin Lawrence, in the original “Bad Boys,” shares the rarified air of Eddie Murphy in “Beverly Hills Cop”.
Joe Pantoliano makes a welcomed return as Pepto-Bismol-swigging Captain Howard, a still capable riff on all of those screaming captains from Beverly Hills Cop movies.

Oh yeah, Bad Boys for Life is straight up copping the Fast & Furious formula (complete with their own #JusticeForHan storyline).
Sure, they're copping licks from John Wick, Mission Impossible, Fast & Furious, and Fury Road left and right, but they're having a good time doing it.

Bad Boys for Life doesn't manage to follow in Fast & Furious' footsteps and reinvent an older action franchise for an era where superheroes and world-building reign supreme, yet it proves there's still room for two everyman Miami detectives who're just trying to make the world a better place.
The brand of over-the-top action that Michael Bay’s films once provided have been usurped by the Fast & Furious and John Wicks of the world.
Bad Boys For Life is like a less self-aware Hot Fuzz , a movie about how much of a pain in the ass it is to be cops who work with wannabe action heroes.

It's been 25 years since the original Bad Boys – the Lethal Weapon / Miami Vice hybrid that launched the movie careers of former music video director Michael Bay and then-Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Will Smith.

New cast members Paola Nuñez (The Purge tv series), Charles Melton (The Sun is Also a Star), Vanessa Hudgens (Spring Breakers), and Alexander Ludwig (The Hunger Games) have their own individual moments to shine in the otherwise Smith/Lawrence-focused film as members of an elite Miami PD squad.
A new police unit named AMMO takes charge of the investigation, headed by a tough captain named Rita (Paola Nuñez, TV’s The Purge ) and her elite group: tech wizard Dorn (Alexander Ludwig, The Hunger Games ), weapons expert Kelly (Vanessa Hudgens, Spring Breakers ) and the very sarcastic Rafe (Charles Melton, TV’s Riverdale ).
The Fast and Furious vibe comes from a no-nonsense female lieutenant who has history with Mike, played effectively by Paola Nuñez, and the team she runs of younger agents (Alexander Ludwig from The Hunger Games, Charles Melton from The Sun is Also a Star, and Vanessa Hudgens from The Knight Before Christmas), who treat Mike and Marcus with a combination of awe and mockery.
See it at the Roxie, where it opened Jan. 10 and continues this week, and then go and check out her masterpieces, like “Cleo from 5 to 7,” “Vagabond,” “The Gleaners & I,” “The Beaches of Agnes” and “Faces Places.”
But as obnoxiously convoluted as things might get (Sony originally flirted with filming two Bad Boys sequels back-to-back and it shows), there is an intense focus on Mike and Marcus’ relationship that reminded me a little of Lethal Weapon 2 .
