Her investigation leads from forgotten corners of the French countryside to off-hours at the green markets of Paris, following those who insist on finding a use for that which society has cast off, whether out of necessity or activism.

Irish director Lenny Abrahamson, who made his mark with 2012?s underappreciated thriller What Richard Did , follows up 2014?s festival favourite Frank with this sensitive adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s novel.
From the Beckettian tragicomedy of Adam & Paul to the musical madness of Frank via the sociopathy of What Richard Did , he has proved himself one of cinema’s most astutely truthful artists.
Garage’s protagonist had learning difficulties; What Richard Did dealt with teenage murder; Frank was about music and mental illness; and now there’s Room, which won lead actress Brie Larson an Oscar while walking an impossibly thin tightrope.
His previous features “Frank,” in which Michael Fassbender performed the entire movie with a mask on his face, and “What Richard Did” were meticulous studies of human behavior, portrayed with a unique sensitivity.
Assisted by production designer Ethan Tobman, the What Richard Did director makes Ma and Jack’s living quarters a mutable space whose four walls abound with revealing little details.

Pugh is Dani, a troubled young woman who, when she’s first introduced, is struggling to get any attention from her shitty boyfriend, Christian (Jack Reynor, recalling his oblivious upper crust prick from What Richard Did , except older and even more uncaring).
Jack Reynor makes Christian a decidedly more layered and interesting character than most other takes on this material surely would allow, giving his strongest performance since his sublime turn in 2012’s drama What Richard Did.
