A sci-fi thriller with hints of Danny Boyle 's 1994 "Shallow Grave," the new film "Time Lapse" revolves around three roommates grappling with the ethics and side effects of a fortune-telling contraption.
A nifty little cross between Primer and Shallow Grave, with a central MacGuffin that manages to maintain its plausibility until the credits roll.
This movie falls in the same general category as Colin Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed, a low-budget genre flick with more ideas than money that popped up at film festivals, and there’s nothing wrong with that.
“Prime”,”Safety Not Guaranteed” and “Project Almanac” had more going for them in terms of plot, but the performances could still have made this work.
Time Lapse is therefore in the spirit of Richard Matheson’s “Button, Button” (adapted cinematically as The Box) or W.W. Jacobs’ “The Monkey’s Paw”.
Finn (Matt O’Leary of “Live Free or Die Hard”) is a painter who serves as building superintendent for a small bungalow-style apartment complex.
