What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: Relevant context: The Last Letter from Your Lover comes from a novel by Jojo Moyes, who also wrote Me Before You (and its three sequels!), adapted into a movie starring Emilia Clarke.
Having previously made her name with the spiky, Sundance-stamped girls-gone-wild comedy “Never Goin’ Back,” director Augustine Frizzell doesn’t seem an obvious fit for any of the dewy, edgeless mini-movies that make up “The Last Letter From Your Lover”: Sure enough, she had no hand in the script, which playwright Nick Payne and author Esta Spalding have drawn with little great inspiration from the 2008 bestseller by Jojo Moyes, the same wildly popular romance novelist who wrote “Me Before You.”
Despite also being memorable for featuring one of the final performances of Chariots of Fire’s Ben Cross, Last Letter From Your Lover lacks the spirit, emotional rollercoaster, or truly engaging contemporary leads that lifted cinema’s only other attempt at adapting the much-loved Moyes – 2016’s Me Before You .
Me Before You , for example, sold millions of copies, before going on to inspire a hit box-office adaptation starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin.
Rather less objectionable than 2016’s ableist romantic fantasy “Me Before You,” another Moyes adaptation, “The Last Letter From Your Lover” is at least partly about the frustrations of love in any era, and via any channels of communication.
To be honest, I’m not that familiar with her work but I remember her other novel Me Before You was also made into a movie , which I have yet to see.

Following in the same rowdy footsteps as the company’s 2012 hit Spring Breakers while keeping to a similar aesthetic as 2017’s The Florida Project , comes Never Goin’ Back .
Just as Sean Baker brought light to underrepresented low-income families with The Florida Project , Frizzell does something similar with her focus on two teenage girls in her feature debut.
Angela, for her part, comes off like a grown-to-teenhood version of Brooklynn Prince’s Moonee from 2017’s “The Florida Project.”
Take “Spring Breakers” by way of “The Florida Project,” add a drizzle of “American Honey,” and you’ve got writer-director Augustine Frizzell’s directorial debut, the audacious, anarchic girls-gone-wild comedy “Never Goin’ Back,” set deep in the heart of small-town Texas.
I already said “raunchy,” didn’t I? Never Goin’ Back is sort of like Spring Breakers crossed with The Florida Project, mixed with the comedic preferences of Jay and Silent Bob or Harold and Kumar.
It has a lot more shared DNA with the likes of Spring Breakers, as well as last year’s The Florida Project and Tangerine, from the same director.
