Now imagine that after the credits rolled, Ice and J-Lo decided that the best thing to do with their camera now that they’d located this mythic people, whose ancient ways of life will be totally alien to western civilization, was to make them act in a remake of Larry Clark ’s youthsploitation headache “ Kids ”.
Filmed entirely with nonprofessional young actors, “The Tribe” recalls early silent films of course, but also such alarmist cinematic portraits of the young as “Kids” — especially in its confrontational sexuality — and the so-called “problem pictures” of the 1950s.
The director pulls no punches in his ugly depiction of base human behavior, and the result is a little like watching a movie by Larry Clark (Kids, Bully).
Slaboshpytskiy films in mobile, long takes, smooth and portentous, which at times recall Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket or Gus Van Sant’s Elephant.

This location is key to what follows: Like the dance academy in Dario Argento’s “Suspiria” (or the school in 2014’s Critics’ Week triumph “The Tribe”), the college appears to be a placeless, hermetically sealed environment permeated with heightened emotion; a kind of twisted dream-logic dominates and permits events to get suitably out of hand.
Like The Tribe , a Ukrainian film about a teen drug ring at a boarding school for deaf students, there’s hardly an adult to be found.
Staring Jessica Rothe ( La La Land , The Tribe) as a college student trapped in a Groundhog Day kind of scenario, the film offers an interesting enough premise, but sadly falls at the last hurdle by playing it far too safe.
