Directed by Kyle Newacheck (Workaholics, Adam Devine’s House Party), Murder Mystery is basically Clue, but not really because Clue would never.
Unfortunately, production value and marquee names are all we get in Kyle Newacheck's Murder Mystery , a film whose script offers less enjoyment than the average game of Clue .
Far less enjoyable than other crime-inspired comedies like 2001’s Gosford Park, 2005’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and even something as silly as 1985’s Clue, Murder Mystery is annoying and lazily written by James Vanderbilt (Independence Day: Resurgence).
For anyone who mourns those days, the mere idea of a daffy, spoofy “Clue” knockoff, with two popular American stars heading up a large international cast, might sound like a reasonably enticing prospect.
The film brings to mind broad comedy murder mysteries like Clue.

Released in the same week as Happy Gilmore 2 on Netflix, it’s remarkable that this theatrical comedy wasn’t condemned to the same straight-to-streaming, flavor-of-the-week fate.
At its best, which is fleeting, “Murder Mystery” evokes an unholy mix of Agatha Christie and “ National Lampoon’s European Vacation ,” with an aspirational dash of the 1963 Stanley Donen romantic actioner, “ Charade .”

This flattens the cool, retro setup of the movie into something much more familiar—though perhaps not surprising, given the success of Kenneth Branagh’s souped-up (and mostly flavorless) Murder on the Orient Express adaptation.
Christie herself remains a hot commodity, as evidenced by recent screen adaptations of “And Then There Were None” and “Murder on the Orient Express.”
There’s been a bevy of these comedies released in the past decade or so, some of them better than this one (2018’s Game Night springs to mind, or 2010’s Date Night ).
Indeed, it follows a familiar script for couples who have seen the magic fade ("Date Night," "Keeping Up With the Joneses"), only to rediscover each other through an adventure that usually involves people trying to kill them -- and in this case, conspicuously takes place in locales where a producer/star and his family might want to vacation.
There’s a little tension there as Charles’ uncle Malcolm (Terrence Stamp, Superman II ) stole his fiance, Suzi (Shioli Kutsuna, Deadpool 2 ).

“Murder Mystery” is a film that will make one yearn for the good old days of “Paul Blart: Mall Cop,” when badly written crime caper comedies has the common sense to hire Kevin James instead of acting talent that could actually be put to good use.
