Themes
Shohei Imamura's The Ballad of Narayama, a certain influence on some of the symbology in Spring, Summer..., is also a denser and more daring meditation on some of the same themes, though the more explicitly religious valences of Spring, Summer... help give it a unique aura.
Finally, Jay R. Ferguson (2000's " The In Crowd ") is loathsome as Beth's rat of an ex Keith, a couple half-hearted attempts at giving him a conscience coming too little too late for a character who enters the film with a flashing neon sign hung around his neck blinking "Bad Guy."
Rich in atmosphere but dramatically meager, The Isle, unlike Takashi Miike's superb Audition, has little to offer beyond its self-consciously shocking imagery.
I compare Kim's jarring view into the main characters' lives with Takashi Miike's bizarre, compelling (and gut-wrenching) 1999 film "Audition."

What Kim has in fact produced, though you'll have to (and should) see it to savor the flavor, is akin to what David Lynch pulled off in 1999's The Straight Story , a gentle fable that glows with the aura of neuroses briefly tamed, but also a deceptively simple parable that never quite occludes the sadness and regret that impinge on any life.
