In a small village in a valley everyone who reaches the age of 70 must leave the village and go to a certain mountain top to die. If anyone should refuse they would disgrace their family. Old Orin is 69. This winter it is her turn to go to the mountain. But first she must make sure that her eldest son Tatsuhei finds a wife.

What critics compared The Ballad of Narayama to
Shohei Imamura's The Ballad of Narayama, a certain influence on some of the symbology in Spring, Summer..., is also a denser and more daring meditation on some of the same themes, though the more explicitly religious valences of Spring, Summer... help give it a unique aura.
Obviously, the isolated commune in Midsommar is a pagan community, and a shocking The Ballad of Narayama styled dispatch of its elders is explained in a placating way for its anthropological observers.
