But the stuffy, stilted, lumbering “Allied” earns a place beside David Selzer’s similarly overblown “Shining Through” (1992) among misguided big-budget attempts to go back to the front.
But Tom has something else if you look at his early films, particularly Punchline or Philadelphia, there�s a lot of rage in there, and a lot of darkness, and it stands next to him.
Perhaps it is wrong to label a film such as director Wes Anderson's "Rushmore" since it is such a completely original and thoroughly engaging motion picture that it does not really fall under any certain genre, but I will say that it is the best "coming-of-age" film since 1986's "Stand by Me" and "Lucas," and one of the few movies made recently that I would call magical in everything it does, and in all of its little details.
In her early movies, beginning with “Lucas,” Ryder had a thorny, “Lost Boys” charisma; as an adult, she shrank, receding like the Cheshire cat into those huge brown eyes.
When she gets to share the screen with Ryder, who was roughly the same age as Brown when she landed her first role in the movie Lucas, it’s a lovely, circle-of-life moment.
The script - courtesy of screenwriters David Seltzer ("My Giant," "Shining Through") and Brandon Camp & Mike Thompson (making their collective debut) - also manages to include some decent bits of humor that serve as comic relief.
