Personally, I feel that an overall flavor of Zweig is simply one layer of resemblance in the film: that the theme of servitude in old Europe’s service industry is far more reminiscent of Bohumil Hrabal’s 1971 novel I Served the King of England (filmed in 2006 by Jiri Menzel).
To the best of my knowledge, he has not mentioned another work that might have been a useful model, Jiri Menzel’s I Served the King of England .
