The Neon Demon (2016)
Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn
influenced by Starry Eyes (2014)
Visuals Themes
There are markers of comparison along the way?Natasha Braier's (2014's " The Rover ") intoxicating cinematography and saturated color scheme remind of Terrence Malick by way of Dario Argento's 1977 masterpiece " Suspiria ," while the portrayal of Hollywood's soul-devouring politics is not unlike 2014's " Starry Eyes "?but these are superficial at best once the trailblazing Refn has his way with the material.
The Neon Demon works best when it leans into the darkest, black-hearted depths of the fashion industry, much like Starry Eyes did with acting and Black Swan did with ballet.
She is simply possessed with some mysterious, unbridled spirit in this film that channels Alex Essoe in Starry Eyes and a cornered Juliette Lewis in Natural Born Killers.
A few casting choices I will talk about are Alex Essoe ( Starry Eyes , Tales of Halloween ) as Wendy Torrence, Roger Dale Floyd ( The Painter , Kronos ) as young Danny Torrence, and Carl Lumbly ( A Cure for Wellness , Men of Honor ) as Dick Hallorann.
Essoe is an actor we at THN have been following since her breathtaking turn in Starry Eyes , and it’s brilliant to finally see her in a big studio movie.
In Doctor Sleep , he re-stages key scenes and even shots from The Shining , inserting lookalikes—like Alex Essoe from Starry Eyes , who does a mean Shelley DuVall—into his moving wax museum.
