It’s a flashback structure reminiscent of the one the filmmaker adopted in The Social Network but also of an earlier film on this subject, Brett Morgen’s exhilarating agitprop documentary Chicago 10 , which tackled the same events with a mixture of archival footage set to modern rock and animated reenactments adapted from the court transcripts.
Morgen’s “Chicago 10” documentary filled that gap with a rotoscoped cast (including an inspired Hank Azaria as Hoffman) and wielded more cinematic ambition when it came to representing the events at hand.

The animated characters are graced with lifelike movement and detail in the vein of Richard Linklater's "Waking Life" and "A Scanner Darkly," with a rotoscoped motion-capture technique in which artists paint over live footage with computers.
Working from stranger-than-fiction transcripts of the (sadly unphotographed) courtroom proceedings, writer/director Brett Morgan has assembled an all-star cast of character actors (Hank Azaria, Dylan Baker, Nick Nolte, etc.) to portray that world-class cast of characters (including Abbie Hoffman and Black Panther Bobby Seale), animated in a rotoscoped style reminiscent of Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly.
If you don't--or if you, like me, weren't born yet--director Brett Morgan mixes archived footage with rotoscoping (the animation seen in "A Scanner Darkly") to take you back and recreate the trial of protestors like Abbie Hoffman (voiced by Hank Azaria) and Jerry Rubin (Mark Ruffalo), who formed the "Yippies" and became more like celebrities than hippies.
A more painterly style of animation with shades of Richard Linklater’s Waking Life or A Scanner Darkly is used to give visual form to scenes that only exist in audio format, such as a lone jam session recorded at the house of Cobain’s first girlfriend, Tracy Marander (the girl of the song About A Girl), which is interrupted by a phone call while the tape’s still running.

Finally, the best new film this weekend comes from famed documentarian Brett Morgen ("The Kid Stays in the Picture," among many others), who takes more than 100 hours of remarkable footage and turns it into the fascinating effort called " Jane ."
