In the 1820s, a taciturn loner and skilled cook travels west to Oregon Territory, where he meets a Chinese immigrant also seeking his fortune. Soon the two team up on a dangerous scheme to steal milk from the wealthy landowner’s prized Jersey cow—the first, and only, in the territory.

What critics compared First Cow to
In many ways, Train Dreams feels like a cinematic cousin to Terrence Malick’s Days of Heaven or Kelly Reichardt’s First Cow.
In its final stretch, the feature eventually mutates into a tense wilderness thriller more in the mold of The Last of the Mohicans or Reichardt’s slow-burn Oregon Trail masterpiece, Meek’s Cutoff (2011).
Fans of “Pig” have name-dropped North Miami native Kelly Reichardt, whose films center around marginal figures in the Pacific Northwest, and indeed, parts of it suggest the movie “First Cow,” her masterful meditation on friendship and the birth of American capitalism, would have been if it had taken place in the present day.
