Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)

Chadwick Boseman’s death from cancer in 2020 hangs over “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” the same way Brandon Lee’s does for “The Crow,” Carrie Fisher’s does in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” and Paul Walker’s does in the post-“Furious 7” films in that series.

What should also be noted is the frequency that a prominent role is given to a Black actor in films or TV series that have an East Asian lead, from the animated film version of “Mulan” with Eddie Murphy to the current “Quantum Leap” with Ernie Hudson (“Ghostbusters”) as Dr. Ben Song’s supervisor and head of the Quantum Leap time travel project.
It also doesn’t help that his motives and the design of his underwater kingdom look and sound scarily similar to 2018’s Aquaman , which actually performed better on a technical level.
Costume designer Ruth E. Carter and production designers Hannah Beachler and Jason T. Clark are certainly having lots of fun here with mixing various cultural elements into the fantasy world of the film, and I was amused a bit by an underwater sequence showing Namor’s underwater kingdom (I notice that they can somehow speak and hear pretty well in water just like the characters of “Aquaman” (2019)).
To paraphrase James Cromwell’s Captain Dudley Smith from L.A. Confidential : “I wouldn't trade places with Ryan Coogler for all the whiskey in Ireland.”
